COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Journey through time and place while examining some of the greatest masterpieces created. In this course, students will explore world regions and study the unique art and architecture that defines modern-day civilizations. From Picasso to Hiroshige, participants will learn the fundamental concepts of art, how to look at and evaluate art, and the intended function of art museums through hands-on activities, discussions, written assignments, and objective assessments.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and explain the significance of artworks produced in various world regions
- Identify and discuss, utilizing relevant terminology, formal elements, principles of design, and stylistic characteristics found in artworks from various world regions
- Converse with others about art and the function of art in modern society
- Identify and obtain valid resources for the study of art history and the applied arts
- Analyze works, placing them in historical, social, and cultural context
- Create hands-on activities demonstrating an understanding of the techniques used by master artists

- Europe: Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Anselm Kiefer, Guggenheim Bilbao
- The United States: Picasso, Frank Lloyd Wright, Andy Warhol, Romare Bearden, Duane Hanson, Cindy Sherman
- The Americas: Mexican muralists, Native American jewelry and textiles
- Africa and the Pacific Cultures: Art of Burkino Faso, Nankani compound, African furniture, Maori meetinghouse, sand painting
- Other Art Forms: Advertising and graphic design, crafts, film and television
- Writing About Art: Art historians and critics, critical analysis
